The crime took place Feb. 6, 1973, and with no time for investigation or a defense, the bench trial was held and Ray was convicted on April 11, 1973 by a Judge who said he did not agree with the mandatory sentence for Ray, but could do nothing. No evidence tied Ray to the crime, it was based solely on a faulty line up and the twisting and manipulation of witnesses statements. The victim's brother was a police cadet, and the victim a drug dealer.
